UÇAN: “GREED IS ONE OF THE MAIN ROOT CAUSES OF OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY FAILURES!”
Dr. Rüştü Uçan, Head of Occupational Health and Safety at Üsküdar University, made striking remarks on workplace safety, emphasizing that human greed and profit-driven motives are among the biggest threats to occupational health.
Referring to the recent hotel fire tragedy in Bolu, Uçan pointed out that although the hotel had over 300 guests, legal regulations did not require it to hire a safety expert due to its staff size and low-risk classification. He stated that lack of professional safety services, emergency systems, and preparedness were key factors in the incident, and stressed the need for stricter regulations and heavier penalties for employers neglecting safety.
Uçan also highlighted the importance of early warning systems, which are actively used in six countries. He called for their widespread implementation in Turkey to allow precious seconds for action during emergencies like earthquakes.
Addressing post-earthquake fire risks due to gas leaks, electrical faults, and chemical spills, he emphasized the urgent need for automatic gas shut-off systems inside buildings.
Speaking on construction safety, Uçan drew attention to tower cranes in city centers, calling them a major hazard due to the risk of heavy loads falling onto crowded streets.
Lastly, he underscored the need for imported machinery to meet Turkish safety standards, including Turkish manuals and local training, and called on NGOs to take more responsibility in this area.
